What is Red Hat Device Edge?

Red Hat® Device Edge extends operational consistency across edge and hybrid cloud environments, no matter where devices are deployed in the field. Red Hat Device Edge combines enterprise-ready lightweight Kubernetes container orchestrations using MicroShift with Red Hat Enterprise Linux® to support different use cases and workloads on small, resource-constrained devices at the farthest edge.

Devices at the far edge need a different approach

Edge devices such as drones, IoT gateways, points of sale/information, and vehicle systems have to operate with limited computing resources, power, cooling, and connectivity. Additionally, they’re often hard to access, with little or no on-site technical expertise.

To meet these challenges, users need a flexible platform that can consistently support different workloads across devices and locations.

About edge computing

Edge computing shifts computing power away from core datacenters and distributes it closer to users and data sources—often across a large number of locations., providing faster response times, more reliable services, and a better application experience back to users.

Features

Use case based deployment

Deploy and manage virtual or containerised workloads on resource-constrained edge devices, orchestrated with or without Kubernetes, on the same edge-optimized operating system.

Lightweight Kubernetes

Use container orchestration through MicroShift, an open source project built with the edge capabilities of Red Hat OpenShift, optimized for resource constrained devices.

Edge-optimized OS capabilities

Automated device onboarding, customizable image generation,over-the-air updates, and intelligent rollbacks provided by Red Hat Enterprise Linux minimize the need for on-site expertise.

Consistent Kubernetes API

Use the same tooling that works with existing Kubernetes distributions like Red Hat OpenShift, including helm charts, Ansible Kubernetes playbooks, and CI/CD pipelines.

Lifecycle management

Integrations with Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes, Red Hat Satellite, and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform make it possible to manage tens of thousands of distributed nodes.

GitOps for consistency

Use Git code repositories to deploy a consistent platform image across potentially tens of thousands devices.

Benefits

Deploy only what you need

Meet the needs of different use cases, devices with limited hardware resources, locations, and workload types.
