Red Hat lanza su primera pila de aplicaciones de código abierto

Red Hat ha presentado su primera pila integrada de aplicaciones de código abierto. La solución está basada en el servidor de aplicaciones JBoss que Red Hat adquiriera el pasado verano.

El producto, denominado Red Hat Application Stack, incluye software, soporte y actualizaciones para un único servidor que corra Red Hat Enterprise Linux, JBoss Application Server, JBoss Hibermate y una de dos bases de datos de código abierto: MySQL o PostgreSQL.

Dirigida a desarrolladores Linux y Java que corran menos de diez servidores, la oferta será suministrada online a través de Red Hat Network. La suscripción anual parte de un precio de 1.999 dólares para un único servidor, y no implica costes extraordinarios por licencias de acceso cliente.

El pasado junio, durante la cumbre anual de la compañía, Red Hat abandonó su propio producto Red Hat Application Server en favor de la solución JBoss, adquirida por la organización en abril por unos 400 millones de dólares.

Todd Barr, director de marketing de Red Hat para el segmento empresarial, ha explicado que la compañía confía en que muchos clientes preferirán la nueva oferta a servidores de aplicación propietarios, como WebLogic de BEA Systems y WebSphere Application Server de IBM. Según un reciente sondeo realizado por la consultora Evans Data entre 700 desarrolladores, las soluciones de BEA e IBM todavía son consideradas los servidores de aplicación líderes en el mercado. JBoss ocupa la sexta posición en el ranking.

Por otra parte, Barr ha quitó importancia a la posible competencia con HP, a pesar de que este suministrador ofrece tres pilas de middleware de código abierto, incluida una basada en JBoss y Red Hat. HP, con quien Red Hat mantiene un acuerdo para el suministro de Red Hat Enterprise Linux sobre los servidores Proliant e Integrity, considera que su oferta se diferencia de la de Red Hat al incluir soporte hardware.

La nueva oferta también entra en competencia con las soluciones de proveedores de soporte de código abierto como SpikeSource y OpenLogic. Estas empresas certifican y soportan aplicaciones open-source que en muchos casos corren sobre servidores basados en Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Red Hat ha anunciado que sus futuras pilas estarán orientadas a mercados verticales, como los de salud y telecomunicaciones.
