Brazilian Federal Court Unifies IT Infrastructure With Red Hat Solutions

Distrito Federal Justice Court deploys Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Cluster Suite to experience increased performance, cost savings and security

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Distrito Federal Justice Court (TJDFT) has implemented Red Hat solutions across the IT systems of its 16 courts and is leveraging the performance, security and cost-effective benefits of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Cluster Suite.

In 2001, TJDFT had a heterogeneous IT environment that consisted of a variety of servers and operating systems. Each solution required special attention and resulted in increased IT costs. With the challenge of a limited budget, TJDFT decided to reduce its systems to two platforms. "We created a testing environment in a development server with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and ultimately selected this as one of our two platforms," said Bernardo Araújo, technology sub-secretary at TJDFT.

Early in 2002, one of the courts faced uptime problems with its server and began experimenting with solutions. "We took a computer and put in a new hard drive, more memory and installed Red Hat Enterprise Linux and the InterSystems Cache database, certified by Red Hat," said Araújo. "The new Red Hat Enterprise Linux server performed much better than the previous solution, and with high availability." The organization then began implementing Red Hat Enterprise Linux in its remote court systems.

After TJDFT deployed Red Hat solutions throughout its 16 courts, it began to migrate its main IT environment, located in Brasília . "We had enjoyed good experiences after deploying Red Hat Enterprise Linux throughout the courts, so decided to migrate our main Brasília system, which has a much more complex environment with two thousand simultaneous connections. We decided to deploy the solution in stages to make it easier internally," said Araújo.

Soon, the main court in Brasília set up a cluster with Red Hat Cluster Suite that consisted of three computers with CISC architecture, using HP 64-bit processors. "Our Red Hat cluster performs fantastically with no performance problems or downtime for our applications. Once this was successfully implemented, we began the migration of the main IT system to Red Hat Enterprise Linux," said Araújo.

TJDFT's database-server environment, applications for development, production and replication all now run Red Hat Enterprise Linux. "Our IT environment is now completely homogeneous and more secure since centralizing and unifying the whole infrastructure with Red Hat solutions," said Araújo. "Three thousand connections run simultaneously in the database and support 300 hits per second for consultation. With Red Hat Enterprise Linux, we have a reliable solution to support these needs."

In addition to the performance boost, enhanced security and unification of systems delivered by Red Hat solutions, TJDFT also experienced impressive cost savings. The cost of the courts' new infrastructure is equivalent to 70 percent of the costs of its previous environment, which ran proprietary solutions.
