Red Hat to Offer Special Promotion On Red Hat Linux 7.1 in Conjunction With High Marks From Industry Reviewers

Reviews by Leading Industry Publications Deem Red Hat Linux 7.1 the Most Significant Release to Date and TUX 2.0 the Standard for Linux-Based Web Servers

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. -

Red Hat, Inc. (Nasdaq:RHAT), the leader in developing, deploying and managing open source solutions, announced today that Red Hat Linux 7.1, with the 2.4 kernel, and Red Hat's TUX 2.0 Web server have received several outstanding marks from leading industry reviewers. In conjunction with these positive reviews, Red Hat will be offering a special "instant rebate" promotion through their retail distribution on select Red Hat Linux 7.1-based products throughout August.

Recent reviews in CNET, InfoWorld and eWeek found Red Hat Linux 7.1 to be a highly-effective operating system in enterprise settings. Several new configuration tools and the Red Hat Network, a Web-based system management service, contributed to its distinction as the best release of Red Hat Linux to date. eWeek labs also found that Red Hat's TUX 2.0 Web server was able to perform nearly three times faster than current server mainstay Apache.

    For example:

-- CNET named Red Hat Linux 7.1 the "Editor's Choice" out of a comprehensive review of seven major Linux distributions, stating that "Red Hat Linux 7.1 is the clear winner; it offers a wide selection of applications and servers as well as a stellar support and administration system. In the current Linux landscape, enterprise users will be hard-pressed to find a distribution more balanced than Red Hat."

-- In a separate standalone review, CNET also gave Red Hat Linux 7.1 a ranking of 9 (out of 10), citing upgrades via the Red Hat Network as a key feature of the latest distribution. The review states that "Buffed up with a new kernel, vastly improved hardware detection, foolproof package management, and an Internet-based software management feature that's in a class by itself, version 7.1 is Red Hat's most significant upgrade yet."

-- InfoWorld lab tested Red Hat Linux 7.1's new capabilities through implementation on three enterprise tiers: end-user, middle-tier and back-end systems. The subsequent review named Red Hat Linux 7.1 as a solid alternative in the enterprise, stating that "this cost-effective OS yields enterprise-level reliability, performance and manageability while reducing infrastructure costs."

-- eWeek test labs found Red Hat Linux 7.1 to have positive short-term and long-term business impact. Networking and scalability advances from the incorporation of the 2.4 kernel are anticipated to improve server performance in the short term. Simpler configuration and management tools are anticipated to lessen maintenance in the long term. The review concluded that "Organizations looking for a well-configured Internet server will find Red Hat Linux 7.1 an excellent choice."

-- eWeek labs' review of Red Hat's TUX 2.0 Web server also cited its extremely high speeds and ease of deployment across the enterprise as key factors in its positive review. Reviewers found that "The explosive performance of TUX should allow IT managers to build faster and more scalable Web server farms using fewer servers and processors, which in turn should free up corporate resources to buy bigger and better applications and database servers."

"These extremely favorable reviews illustrate the technical leadership and viability of Red Hat open source solutions for any organization, from small businesses to enterprise users alike," said Dr. James Neiser, chief marketing officer of Red Hat, Inc. "With the incorporation of the 2.4 kernel and the integration of Red Hat Network's Internet-based services, Red Hat Linux 7.1 represents one of the most significant releases of the operating system. TUX 2.0 has also raised the bar for high performance Web servers, and we are pleased to make a special offer to our customers for them to take advantage of these highly regarded and well-reviewed products."
