(NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg has chosen Red Hat technologies to modernize its IT infrastructure and launch a self-service IT portal built on a centralized Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform. Replacing proprietary technologies with standardized open source solutions means that university faculty and staff can now acquire IT resources in a flexible, scalable manner from a service catalog.

The hybrid cloud orchestration capabilities of Red Hat CloudForms enable us to centralize our existing provisioning and operational workflows over the whole lifecycle of our Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solution.
With more than 18,000 students and 2,800 employees, the University of Salzburg is a center for innovative research and teaching in Austria. Recognizing the importance of an accessible, high-performing and high-availability IT infrastructure, the university has undergone a number of IT refreshes in the last few years. This includes modernizing its voice and data communications infrastructure across approximately 30 sites, and most recently, an upgrade of its datacenter IT infrastructure.
Despite these updates, administration and provisioning of IT services still required manual time and effort. In addition, some departments also had their own separate IT infrastructures for certain tasks. For example, many departments communicated via their own separate mail and web servers.
Salzburg University sought to simplify IT administration and offer IT services via a central, automated, self-service portal available to all departments. Its IT department also wanted to optimize the use of the university’s existing hardware and provide expanded support for high-performance computing (HPC) applications.
After an in-depth technical and cost-effectiveness evaluation, the IT team at the University of Salzburg chose a solution built on Red Hat technologies to deliver this expanded IT services capability. In the first phase of its project, working with Red Hat Consulting, the university used a Red Hat Infrastructure Academic Institution Site Subscription and deployed Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Virtualization, Red Hat CloudForms, and Red Hat Satellite. The campus-wide Red Hat Infrastructure Academic Institutions Site Subscription is designed to support qualifying higher learning institutions and the academic community with access to a full Red Hat solution stack for both academic and production use cases, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux and other Red Hat technologies
Following the success of its initial implementation, the University of Salzburg is planning to expand its use of Red Hat technologies with a project focused on more efficiently distributing software applications and tools and making the service catalog accessible to students. Additionally, the IT department is gradually building up a virtual landscape based on Red Hat technologies parallel to its existing virtualization environment, with plans to migrate the majority of its proprietary virtualization infrastructure to Red Hat Virtualization. The university also plans to deploy Red Hat OpenStack Platform as part of its Red Hat Infrastructure Academic Institution Site Subscription.
