Unified Workload Migration: Moving VMs and Containers to OpenShift with OpenShift Virtualization

Jump to section

This session shows a real-world solution to upgrading existing infrastructure by migrating virtual machines (VMs) and containerized workloads to Red Hat OpenShift and OpenShift Virtualization. Using a hybrid methodology, companies can put all their workloads onto multiple platforms that are based on Openshift without leaving behind critical legacy applications.

The presentation begins with a bird's-eye view of the current legacy environment with isolated VMs and unmanaged container deployments. Next, it introduces OpenShift as an integrated platform for next-generation workloads in which VMs and containers coexist together and are managed through one shared developer and operator interface.

The demo with the Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV) processes a sequential VM migration scenario—starting from discovery of the source and plan generation to execution and validation of the running VM in OpenShift. It also processes conversion of a monolithic application to containers using the natively embedded CI/CD capabilities of OpenShift and automated deployment.

The focal point is the central monitoring and observability post-migration: OpenShift's integrated console enables end-to-end monitoring, logging, and VM and container resource optimization in a centralized manner. Not only is this easier to administer, but it also accelerates the way to cloud-native processes.

What we’ll discuss today

  • Challenges with fragmented environments: isolated VMs (vSphere, RHV, Hyper-V) and ad-hoc containers.
  • The cost and complexity of managing hybrid workloads.
  • OpenShift Virtualization = bridging traditional VMs with cloud-native apps
  • Transition from “infrastructure silos” → “unified hybrid platform”.
  • Transition workloads to new paradigms
    • Virtualization to Virtualization
    • Virtualization to Operators (Containerized)
    • Virtualization to Containers (Application)
