  • 4 reasons to run applications on Microsoft Azure Red Hat OpenShift

4 reasons to run applications on Microsoft Azure Red Hat OpenShift

March 12, 2026•
Resource type: Checklist
Download PDF

Jointly engineered, operated, and supported by Red Hat and Microsoft, Azure Red Hat® OpenShift® offers a comprehensive application platform that helps organizations build, deploy, and scale applications across an open hybrid cloud environment. This checklist presents 4 key reasons to modernize and deploy applications on Azure Red Hat OpenShift.

Microsoft Azure

1 Accelerate development

As a comprehensive application platform, Azure Red Hat OpenShift provides built-in preconfigured tools, single-click deployment, and integration with Azure-native services for more efficient application delivery. Organizations should consider a fully integrated platform to get started without manual intervention from operations, with less hassles, and without delay:

  • Support integrated DevOps tools. Azure Red Hat OpenShift includes fully supported, built-in tools such as (but not limited to) continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), GitOps, observability, service mesh, and serverless. With these tools, developers can use their preferred development environments, programming languages, build tools, runtimes, and application programming interface (API) management tools.
  • Experience smooth integration with Azure-native services. Azure Red Hat OpenShift is a 1st-party Azure-native service and integrates with other Azure services including Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Monitor, and Azure OpenAI.
  • Support a variety of workloads: Azure Red Hat OpenShift supports various workloads including containers, virtual machines (VMs), serverless, and AI-powered applications. Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization is included with the platform at no additional cost. This virtual operator can be used for reliable and efficient migrating and modernizing VMs. Azure Red Hat OpenShift also integrates with the portfolio of Red Hat AI products and Azure AI services.

2 Simplify operations

Azure Red Hat OpenShift improves operational efficiency by providing dedicated platform management by site reliability engineers (SREs) and a consistent model for deployment. Red Hat and Microsoft SREs help automate the deployment and management of OpenShift clusters by taking care of provisioning, scaling, scheduling updates, lifecycle management, and system configuration. Additional improvements in operational efficiency include:

  • Reduced complexity. Red Hat OpenShift provides a unified platform with a single management interface and consistency for building and managing a variety of workloads on Azure, on-premise, a multicloud, or at the network edge. This approach reduces the complexity organizations can experience to accomplish both migration and modernization business goals.
  • Prioritized application delivery. By offloading ongoing infrastructure management, IT teams can focus on deploying applications from Day 1 without the operational burden of handling Day 2 responsibilities.
  • Manage different workloads more consistently. With Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization on Azure Red Hat OpenShift, organizations can run traditional VMs alongside containers with a central management experience. Organizations can run  existing VMs and modernize to containers while choosing their path and pace.

3 Security and compliance

Azure Red Hat OpenShift provides native, built-in security features that support the ongoing needs to have a reliable platform with enhanced security and stability. It is important to note, Azure Red Hat OpenShift:

  • Comes certified with security and compliance requirements. Azure Red Hat OpenShift is certified with numerous compliance requirements that include Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), FedRAMP, Department of Defense Impact Level 4 (DoD IL4), System and Organization Controls (SOC) 1; 2; 3, Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS), and more. Up-to-date, certified security, and compliance allows organizations to focus on critical business activities rather than occupy their time implementing requirements and ongoing audits.
  • Offers confidential containers for enhanced security. Confidential containers in Azure Red Hat OpenShift protect sensitive data by providing a private, hardware-encrypted space.
  • Safeguards identify authentication. Azure Red Hat OpenShift also supports managed identities and workload identities, which provide short-term tokens with a minimal set of permissions. This approach eliminates the need for manual periodic secrets rotation, reducing operational risk and burden.

4 Optimize cloud costs

Azure Red Hat OpenShift helps organizations optimize cloud cost in several ways, including procurement. A unified bill covers Red Hat OpenShift services and the Microsoft Azure infrastructure. IT teams can manage purchases through the Microsoft Azure subscription.

  • Optimized costs for virtual workloads. Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization on Azure Red Hat OpenShift allows organizations to customize their VMs to optimize cloud costs.
  • Flexible consumption models. Organizations can select from on-demand pricing or reserved instance pricing.
  • Apply your committed spend. Organizations can use existing Microsoft Azure Enterprise Agreement (EA) credits or apply your organization’s Microsoft Azure Consumption Commitment (MACC) for Azure Red Hat OpenShift instances to further save costs.
