Red Hat® OpenShift® Virtualization, a feature of Red Hat OpenShift, works together with Portworx Enterprise by Everpure to offer a powerful and flexible alternative to traditional virtualization platforms. The joint solution helps organizations modernize their infrastructure while retaining existing virtual machine (VM) investments.

1. Manage VMs and containers on one platform

Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization and Portworx Enterprise combine to deliver a single Kubernetes-native platform developed to manage VMs and containers side by side. The joint solution:

  • Eliminates the need to separate VM and container operations.
  • Reduces complexity and simplifies infrastructure management.
  • Provides operational continuity for both traditional and cloud-native workloads, allowing organizations to modernize at their preferred pace.

2. Lower the total cost of ownership

The joint solution helps organizations avoid the high costs typically associated with traditional virtualization stacks.  Potential financial benefits include:

  • Reduced technical debt achieved by consolidating platforms, streamlining operations, and reducing conflicting administrative and development modalities.
  • Significant reductions in both capital and operational expenses by consolidating infrastructure.
  • A modern approach to virtualization that allows organizations to scale on demand and save costs.

3. Extend storage management and resilience capabilities

Portworx delivers advanced enterprise storage and data services that can help organizations manage data consistently across traditional virtualization and cloud-native workloads on Red Hat OpenShift. How it works:

  • Portworx provides highly performant storage with built-in high availability, comprehensive disaster recovery (DR), and automated storage and data management operations for business-critical applications.
  • The joint solution offers VM administrators a familiar ClickOps user interface for VM storage workflows, including live migration, synchronous and asynchronous DR, multicluster replication, application input/output (I/O) control, ransomware protection, and automated backups.

4. Follow a low-risk migration path

Organizations can use the migration toolkit for virtualization from Red Hat alongside proven Portworx reference architectures to establish a low-risk path for migrating existing VMs to Red Hat OpenShift.

  • Red Hat’s migration toolkit for virtualization is a feature of Red Hat OpenShift and provides a suite of tools to migrate VMs more efficiently and at scale.
  • Portworx’s migration capabilities further simplify the initial migration process and streamline the operational workflow for long-term scalability requirements.

5. Streamline operations and maintain flexibility

The unified platform supports more efficient management of both VMs and containers, reducing complexity and minimizing manual processes. A modern platform with a smaller footprint delivers a number of benefits:

  • Built-in automation, data protection, and DR tools decrease administrative burden while boosting application uptime and resilience.
  • OpenShift Virtualization provides a ClickOps-based VM administrator console to simplify operations, and enhances functionality with modern technologies such as GitOps, observability, and monitoring.
  • Organizations can maintain existing VM-based applications in Kubernetes while gaining the flexibility to move to any cloud environment when ready.

6. Deploy hybrid and multicloud workloads

With this solution, organizations can choose to deploy workloads on-premise, on a public cloud platform, or in a hybrid environment.

  • Workloads have varying compute, network, storage, and security requirements. As many organizations have found over the past decade, a single infrastructure modality for all workloads can be cumbersome and expensive.
  • Red Hat and Everpure offer flexibility to deploy workloads across different infrastructures optimized for the specific needs of different workload types—and help organizations get ready for the future.

Learn more about modern virtualization

Operational resiliency, security and governance controls, data resiliency and portability, and digital sovereignty are becoming increasingly important in virtualized and cloud-based environments. Together, OpenShift Virtualization and Portworx offer a flexible joint solution for organizations seeking to modernize their virtualization strategies.
