5 advantages of HashiCorp Vault and Ansible for cloud resilience

Managing credentials across a hybrid cloud environment is a major pain point when doing it manually. To scale with a focus on security, automation and secrets management need to work as 1. This checklist explains how to combine secrets management and enterprise automation using Red Hat® Ansible® Automation Platform and HashiCorp Vault in 5 steps.

1. Centralize secrets governance

Unify how secrets are stored, accessed, and governed to prevent credential sprawl across applications, automation, config files, and standalone tools. Centralization helps eliminate preventable incidents—like application programming interface (API) keys accidentally being committed to public Git repositories. Additional centralization tactics include:

  • Maintaining a single system of record for secrets and sensitive data across cloud, datacenter, edge, and network infrastructure.
  • Applying consistent access policies and lifecycle controls instead of an isolated credential logic per team or environment.
  • Extending secrets management to nontraditional nodes and devices that are unable to run a HashiCorp Vault agent natively using Ansible Automation Platform.

2. Replace static credentials with dynamic, identity-based access

Eliminate long-lived secrets embedded across hybrid cloud environments and enforce zero trust principles with credentials that are issued just in time and scoped to identity. Use short-lived, dynamically generated credentials for Secure Shell (SSH), database, API, and cloud access rather than standing privileges using HashiCorp Vault for dynamic secret generation and Ansible Automation Platform for automated deployment. Consider incorporating these 2 tips:

  • Tie secret access to trusted machines and user identities so connections are verified before access is granted.
  • Reduce exposure from leaked keys and compromised identities by ensuring credentials expire automatically after each use.

3. Integrate secrets management natively into automation workflows

Security must be embedded directly into how enterprise automation runs—not bolted on with custom plug-ins, scripts, or manual secret handoffs. Take advantage of platform-native credential types and certified content, such as the hashicorp.vault collection, for HashiCorp Vault integration with Ansible Automation Platform.

  • Inject secrets at runtime so playbooks, inventories, and job templates never store hardcoded or long-lived values.
  • Support modern authentication patterns—including OPenID Connect (OIDC) workload identity—to remove static service accounts from the automation supply chain.

4. Automate full-secret lifecycle from Day 0 to Day 2

Security automation goes beyond storing credentials; organizations need to discover, protect, and govern secrets continuously as their environment grows. Uncover hidden static secrets in playbooks and infrastructure before migrating them into the vault. Teams can take advantage of full-secret lifecycle managed by:

  • Streamlining Day 0-1 provisioning—agent deployment, credential injection, and certificate management—across virtual machines (VMs), containers, and network devices.
  • Keeping Day 2 operations compliant without the manual effort by automating rotation, lease management, and policy enforcement.

5. Deliver auditability and compliance

Scale automation confidently by making secret requests, job executions, and policy decisions visible, traceable, and enforceable. Centralizing audit logging across HashiCorp Vault access and Ansible Automation Platform job runs creates a record of who used the secrets, when, and why. For added auditability and compliance:

  • Embed compliance controls directly into automation workflows so policy enforcement is proactive (not reactive) after an incident.
  • Foster collaboration between security and platform engineering teams by providing shared visibility into secret use, reducing the friction of compliance reporting and accelerating incident response.
