Greenpeace turns to Red Hat to scale its “Planet 4” global engagement platform

Greenpeace embraces open innovation to transform its web presence and increase global engagement.

LONDON -

Red Hat, Inc., the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Greenpeace International worked with Red Hat to help scale and evolve the architecture of its open source engagement platform, Planet 4. Red Hat Consulting collaborated with a mixed-discipline team from Greenpeace to refine the design of Planet 4 and develop an actionable plan to unify the global engagement platform using open source data integration tools and user-centric design methodology.

Taking an open source approach has truly helped us by enabling our large, diverse team of people to work collaboratively on the same platform. With Red Hat’s help, Planet 4 could really push the boundaries of what’s possible in technology.

Matt Browner-Hamlin

head of Engagement Strategy & Planning, Greenpeace International

Planet 4 represents the complete redesign of Greenpeace.org, the back end content management systems, and its global web presences, with the goal of driving a community of change agents to action. Taking inspiration from Red Hat’s Open Decision Framework from the outset, Planet 4 was created using an adaptable and flexible tool stack and workflow that uses open source technologies.

As a global organization with more than 27 national and regional offices - many with their own unique technology stack - Planet 4’s technical landscape is complex, with a lot of data and interactions flowing between systems. Facing challenges around integrating technologies, data visualization, and other aspects of using modern technology to engage its audience, Greenpeace International turned to Red Hat to help it further refine and grow Planet 4 from successful prototype to a global engagement platform.

Red Hat worked with Greenpeace International to understand Planet 4’s users and how they interact with the platform, using agile practices and tools from Red Hat’s Open Practice Library to collaboratively model Greenpeace’s business and technology processes. The design sprint helped Greenpeace International to understand the current integration challenges, develop solutions that could be implemented on a global scale by its small in-house team of technical experts, and to prototype and validate ideas and features that can help its grow supporter numbers and deepen engagement.

Red Hat has helped create clarity for Greenpeace International in a complicated data landscape, making it easier for the organization to manage technical complexities with a limited set of resources. The design sprint resulted in a clear, actionable plan to move the Planet 4 project ahead, helping Greenpeace International take a huge step forward in a very short amount of time. The collaboration with Red Hat to help get Planet 4 to the next level will, in turn, help Greenpeace better collaborate with its supporters.
