Edge computing use cases
Red Hat’s approach to edge computing focuses on 3 categories. Where the edge of your network is depends on your organization, architecture, and use case. Red Hat provides the platforms that support your workloads, wherever you need them.
Enterprise edge allows customers to extend application services to remote locations. It has a core enterprise data store—in a datacenter or as a cloud resource.
The challenges inherent in distributed IT deployments—whether they involve stores, restaurants, branch offices, transit stations, or other types of remote locations—are the kinds of problems that edge computing is built to solve. Like utilities company Brianzacque did by distributing data processing using microservices to analyze and market water quality at consumer fill up stations.
Operations edge focuses on analyzing inputs in real time (from IoT sensors, for example) in order to provide immediate decisions which result in actions. For performance reasons this generally happens on-site. This kind of edge is a place to gather, process, and act on data.
This means improving Internet of Things (IoT) communications between third-party partners and central IT teams working for companies like Siemens. Or investing in software to more quickly process data collected at the steelmaking, mining, and smelting sites owned by Metalloinvest.
Provider edge manages a network for others, as in the case of telecommunications service providers. This kind of edge is focused on creating a reliable, low-latency network with computing environments close to mobile and fixed users.
Like the multi-access edge computing pods Vodafone Idea Limited will place near users to reduce latency. Or Rakuten Mobile’s cloud, which uses network-functions virtualization (NFV) to deploy new services closer to users at the edge. And ZTE Corporation built a microservices-based development platform to develop and deploy updates more quickly to customers using 5G networks.
