Navigating the complexity of enterprise-wide automation

Many organizations find themselves stuck in a cycle of manual, repetitive tasks, which take up valuable time and hinder productivity. Automation helps organizations eliminate the time and errors associated with manual configuration processes, but adoption across an entire organization is complex.

This complexity has costly security implications, especially in an era of AI-driven threats where vulnerability discovery happens at machine speed and exploit development windows have shrunk to hours. Relying on slow, manual patching is a massive liability and no longer viable.

A successful automation strategy requires more than implementing tools; it demands well-defined processes and clear governance so constant change doesn’t undermine progress. By establishing a unified automation framework, organizations can standardize processes, foster cross-functional collaboration, and empower their workforce to shift from routine maintenance to high-value, strategic innovation.

Overcoming initial implementation issues

Building a stable foundation as organizations get started with Red Hat® Ansible® Automation Platform is critical. Although early automation efforts can deliver immediate successes, expanding automation enterprise-wide can often cause enterprises to hit a plateau when technology, organizational culture, and operational processes lack alignment.

Some of the main challenges organizations face when scaling enterprise automation include:

  • Underused platform capabilities: restricting automation to low-impact, simple use cases rather than taking advantage of the platform's full potential.
  • Skills gaps and isolated expertise: lacking structured onboarding or software development backgrounds among traditional system administrators.
  • Implementation gaps: operating without a standardized software development lifecycle (SDLC), which can lead to fragmented content promotion and inefficient, manual ClickOps verification.
  • Bottlenecks from overcentralized governance: When organizations scale without a shared governance model, they inadvertently create a centralized bottleneck. Relying on a single, overworked automation team to write code for the entire enterprise not only stifles velocity, it creates a single point of operational failure.

These compounding technical and operational challenges can trap companies in a cycle of manual, repetitive tasks. This can lead to increased labor costs and delayed return on investment at a time when teams are already struggling with competing priorities, stagnant budgets, and reduced headcount.

Red Hat Services guides organizations through strategic framework development to break through implementation plateaus and align teams. Our experts provide the strategic roadmap, hands-on collaboration, and dedicated support needed to succeed. Whether an organization needs to quickly plan a system upgrade, close the gap between vulnerability discovery and remediation, or scale automation enterprise-wide to build a foundation for artificial intelligence for IT operations (AIOps), Red Hat Services meets customers exactly where they are.

Customer spotlight

See how Mizuho Securities used Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform and Red Hat Consulting to automate more than 90% of their virtual server provisioning tasks and expand the automation of IT service workflows.

We believe that automation will lead to cost benefits, and we’re convinced that expanding automation is a crucial theme for implementing a CI/CD environment.

Gain efficiency across every domain of automation

As organizations seek to embrace enterprise-wide automation, Red Hat Services provides solutions to meet their business needs—from strategy to scale. Through hands-on mentorship and professional guidance, our experts help IT teams establish a baseline deployment centered on a foundational use case, master content lifecycle management, and institute clear onboarding and governance procedures. The result is a unified approach that eliminates fragmented workflows, educates the workforce, and promotes long-term operational success.

Built on Red Hat Services’ experience in helping enterprises across the globe achieve their automation goals, the automation maturity framework aims to guide customers through their roadmap and strategy development. By taking a holistic view of an organization's capabilities, Red Hat Services maps an enterprise’s evolution across 4 distinct maturity domains and 5 levels of maturity—guiding teams from initial awareness and standardization to a fully proactive, institutionalized, and optimized enterprise state.

Domain 1: Platform

Establishing a resilient, scalable platform ensures high availability and eliminates both security flaws and single points of failure. Organizations often begin their automation journey with isolated, single-node environments and completely manual platform management and achieve peak maturity with a fully optimized, continuous, GitOps-driven platform configuration baseline that supports automation across hybrid clouds.

Domain 2: Governance

Unmanaged scaling can trigger configuration drift, unsecured credentials, and heightened vulnerability exposure. To expand automation from a single team to a collaborative, multiteam environment, organizations must implement a strict governance model. By clearly defining responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed (RACI) roles and establishing standardized development, release, and execution processes, this model clarifies operational boundaries and supports successful execution. This structured approach lets teams add security standards at scale—whether organizations are just beginning to define role-based access controls (RBAC) and credential policies or expanding an automated Center of Excellence with Red Hat Consulting.

Domain 3: Developer experience

Isolated workflows, high cognitive overhead, and manual handoffs often restrict engineering velocity and introduce deployment errors. Maturing this domain focuses on shifting left—embedding developer practices such as automated testing, linting, and version control directly into the lifecycle, while using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate playbook creation and reduce onboarding friction. This allows application engineers to go from managing fragmented, ad-hoc scripts to using production-ready orchestration workflows within standardized continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines. Meanwhile, operations teams evolve to implement a highly governed, repeatable self-service catalog along with agentic AI-based automation. Through collaborative, hands-on coaching, Red Hat Consulting works directly with engineering teams to master these capabilities and effectively adopt AI coding tools, thereby streamlining feedback loops and eliminating delivery friction to support faster code development with fewer errors.

Domain 4: Use cases

Ansible Automation Platform has the ability to automate many use cases. By identifying specific business pain points and mapping execution complexity, Red Hat Services helps organizations strategically focus on high-impact initiatives.

By estimating initial impact and tracking post-implementation progress, Red Hat Services guides enterprises to:

  • Instantly execute low-effort quick wins.
  • Scale high-yield projects.
  • Avoid use cases that stall operational progress.

Transitioning from simple, ad-hoc script executions to end-to-end service orchestration and AI-driven use cases maximizes immediate return on investment while establishing a resilient, strategic automation pipeline.

Red Hat Services empowers organizations to transform fragmented automation efforts into a scalable, enterprise-wide strategy from deployment to Day-2 operations. By combining hands-on mentorship with a holistic focus across the 4 maturity domains, Red Hat guides teams so they are empowered to build, manage, and scale automation independently for long-term success.

The Red Hat Services difference

Scaling automation across an enterprise requires far more than just adopting the software—it demands a fundamental shift in culture, skills, and processes. Working straight from the source, our experts help align teams, streamline processes, and integrate diverse environments through a unified approach.

Red Hat Consulting works collaboratively with IT teams to define, prioritize, and safely advance an organization’s automation goals from localized pilots to optimized enterprise workflows.
