CRIX International Eases Pharmaceutical Processes with Red Hat and Alfresco Solutions

Consortium launches CRIX Collaborative Platform using Red Hat, JBoss products and Alfresco

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, and Alfresco Software today announced that the Clinical Research Information Exchange (CRIX), a non-profit collaborative consortium that includes Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Novartis in the development of new drug therapies, has launched a secure and standards-based electronic information exchange for clinical research information that is based on a combination of Red Hat, JBoss and Alfresco solutions. The CRIX Collaboration Platform was developed using Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Alfresco Enterprise Content Management (ECM), JBoss Enterprise Portal Platform and JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, including JBoss Hibernate.

The process behind bringing new drugs to market has always been a complex, costly and labor-intensive process that involves extensive paperwork. Though some of the large bio-pharma businesses have implemented proprietary IT systems that attempt to automate most or all of the process, frequently this information is collected, processed and exchanged manually.

"What we absolutely needed was a platform that could be used across this very broad arena of clinical research that was independent of business processes, legal documentations, intellectual property protections and marketing strategies," said Mark Vermette, product manager for CRIX International. "And the ultimate goal of such a platform would be to enable delivery of faster, more secure and more effective drugs to patients."

In 2007, CRIX International was formed and the CRIX project was placed under its jurisdiction. The organization embarked on the CRIX Collaborative Platform with Rivet Logic, an open source systems integrator. The team decided to utilize open source solutions to ensure that the platform would be based upon established standards and would enable easy participation that could be attributed back to the industry.

"It was quickly clear that we wanted Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss Enterprise Middleware to support our efforts. The biggest reasons for choosing Red Hat were the technical excellence of its products and its legendary support. Its reputation is well-deserved," said Vermette.

With a combination of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Alfresco ECM, JBoss Enterprise Portal Platform and JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, including JBoss Hibernate, the CRIX Collaborative Platform was launched in June 2008 and delivers a shared knowledgebase that is designed to enable increased opportunities for collaboration and facilitate economies of scale unprecedented in the pharmaceuticals industry. The platform should help to lower transaction fees, reduce human error in terms of manual data entry, shorten processing time for new therapies and represents a groundbreaking collaboration tool for the industry.

"Alfresco provides us with enterprise-scale content management solution, based entirely on open standards, enabling consortium members to accelerate collaboration and information flows for clinical research," said Vermette.

Future plans for the CRIX Collaborative Platform include incorporating JBoss jBPM. "The pharmaceutical industry has some very complex regulatory requirements and historically has binders and binders of paper documents with complicated rules on who gets to author them, how they are edited and how the content is controlled," said Vermette. "The JBoss jBPM Framework is very sophisticated technology that will provide these capabilities and should be the 'tipping point' for getting organizations to adopt the CRIX Collaborative Platform."
