Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform Enables KBS to Enhance Competitiveness

KBS implemented the first open source, cloud-based NCPS in Korea, anticipating reduction in TCO by more than 40 percent over five years and achieving nearly 50 percent ROI

Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that KBS, the key public service broadcasting station of Korea, has successfully implemented an open source-based NCPS (Network file based Caption Production System) cloud with Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform.

KBS Broadcast Facility Dept. Production Facility Office
“Red Hat’s extensive support, from the architecture design to solution deployment, enabled us to implement the system successfully, even though OpenStack is fairly new in Korea. KBS is currently investigating whether it will expand its OpenStack-based cloud to other systems following the successful system implementation. KBS will continue to focus on industry-leading service competitiveness.”

Jay Hahm, general manager, Red Hat Korea
“We are so pleased to be the first in Korea to have successfully deployed an open source cloud with KBS and demonstrate the production-readiness of Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform. Red Hat continues to make efforts to help local customers improve their business competitiveness through industry-leading open hybrid cloud solutions. We look forward to continuing to share the importance of open source and OpenStack-based clouds within this region.”

KBS, one of the most influential media in Korea, deployed an OpenStack-based cloud computing system while transforming the existing tape-based KBS World channel video editing and multinational subtitle production process to digital.

KBS was seeking a cloud platform that could change the existing database management system (DBMS) to an open source-based DBMS. After a thorough evaluation of local and foreign cloud platforms, it decided to introduce a cloud-based system with Red Hat’s open source solutions including Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform.

KBS’ NCPS project is the first OpenStack-based cloud system implementation among Korean broadcast networks. KBS has deployed Red Hat Enterprise Linux, a leading open source operating system, Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform, designed to serve as the foundation for building OpenStack-powered clouds.

Red Hat’s leading open source solutions have provided KBS with flexible scalability and an agile system, helping the company to adapt to changing business environments, improve its utilization of system resources and its work process, and highlight KBS’ leadership and competitiveness in the broadcasting service field. In addition, it helped to substantially reduce the amount of time spent for program scheduling and for channel organization, easily connecting with other systems at the broadcasting station.

KBS expects to reduce TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) by more than 40% over five years and reach about 50% ROI based on AS-IS, all while improving the quality of it broadcasting service. The success of the KBS OpenStack Cloud project has become a benchmark case for other broadcast networks in Korea.
