Today, the Fedora Project is pleased to announce the beta availability of Fedora 39, the latest version of the free and open source Fedora Linux operating system. Fedora 39 Beta continues the community’s commitment to bringing the latest Linux and open source innovations to our end users. While some planned updates, including a new DNF package manager and an Anaconda user interface refresh, haven’t made this version, there’s still quite a bit to be excited about.

As a community, we’ve learned over the years that major changes cannot (or at least should not) be made rapidly or on a whim. These updates need to be delivered deliberately and methodically - this might seem to fly in the face of Fedora’s approach to innovation, but it doesn’t! Our users actually need to, well, USE the new goddess in Fedora, so taking time to make sure it works is paramount over shoveling something into the proverbial box.

So what is actually new in Fedora 39 Beta? Fedora Workstation 39 Beta brings GNOME 45 (also a beta), for the latest desktop environment experience. LibreOffice 7.6 is included, as are a series of updates to the GNU Toolchain with gcc 13.2, binutils 2.40, glibc 2.38 and more. These updates aren’t just for developers - they contribute to the overall software security and performance posture of Fedora 39 Beta and will provide benefit to all users.

What is a Fedora Beta release?

Fedora Beta releases are code-complete and will very closely resemble the final release. While the Fedora Project community will be testing this release intensely, we also want our end users to check and make sure that the features you care about are working as intended. The bugs you find and report help make your experience better as well as for millions of Fedora Linux users worldwide! Together, we can help not only make Fedora Linux stronger, but as these fixes and tweaks get pushed upstream to the kernel community, we can contribute to the betterment of the Linux ecosystem and free software holistically.

Let’s test Fedora 39 Beta together

Since this is a Beta release, we expect that you may encounter bugs or missing features. To report issues encountered during testing, contact the Fedora QA team via the test mailing list or in the #quality channel on Fedora Chat. As testing progresses, common issues are tracked in the “Common Issues” category on Ask Fedora.
