The basics

Top tasks to start automating

Consistently manage operating systems and their critical IT workloads

Ansible Automation Platform consistently configures infrastructure workloads, while also deploying and maintaining your systems wherever they are—on-premise, in the cloud, or at edge locations. An agentless platform, Ansible Automation Platform simplifies the management of multiple operating systems, since there is no agent to maintain on the systems themselves.

One common use case is operating system provisioning. Manual provisioning requires IT teams to perform the same process repeatedly, making it time consuming and prone to human error. However, automation can handle most provisioning tasks.

Ansible Automation Platform can also manage both Linux® and Windows services consistently, as well as deploy applications in these environments, via a single playbook. It supports faster migration and upgrade times with improved reliability and lower risk that leads to efficiency and cost savings.

Automate complex multivendor network operations

When it comes to network automation, we recommend a “start small, think big” approach. You can start with simple, read-only use cases that don’t change your network, and then gradually increase your automation to grow your network’s scope and sophistication. To help you get started quickly, Ansible Automation Platform has certified integrations with many vendors with whom you’re likely already working.

For network compliance, you can start by creating reports and network inventories. You may also collect information that tells you about the current state of compliance and where your network is experiencing drift from expected configurations. You’ll be able to clearly identify and then correct anything out of compliance.

As you move to configuration management, you can standardize and enforce configuration data using a single source of truth–in a platform-agnostic way. This approach helps you realize consistency across multivendor solutions.

Operate IT infrastructure all the way to the edge

With automation, the complexity of managing edge automation solutions can be abstracted to the operator. Ansible Automation Platform offers a single, consistent view of your IT landscape, so that your teams can reliably manage thousands of sites, network devices, and clusters. This unified automation approach can help you lower operational expenses and deliver smoother customer experiences at edge sites, where resources are limited. Ansible Automation Platform scales in a flexible manner across edge environments using capabilities such as automation mesh and automation execution environments.

When managing and automating resources at the edge, you can provision infrastructure using an Infrastructure as Code (IaC) model, instead of manual processes. Advantages of this approach include version control using a single source of truth, reduction in human errors and inconsistencies, faster deployments and patching, and elimination of configuration drift.

Efficiently orchestrate across the development lifecycle

Developers are at the heart of much of the work that goes into developing, delivering, and deploying applications. They have to move fast to deliver the innovation businesses need to succeed in a competitive and digital world—which now extends into delivering AI applications and components.

IT plays a key role across the entire lifecycle—from provisioning to quickly moving applications from development to test to production. As an IT professional, you have to ensure that all necessary components are deployed, standard configurations are applied, compliance mandates are met, and that the application is ready to perform under production workloads. Teams are increasingly looking to a platform engineering toolset, where both automation and event-driven automation can boost speed and efficiency. Automation as part of a toolset can extend consistency across the team and complement skills when a vast array of knowledge is required to deliver today’s innovations.
